Legalized marijuana days away in DC

Calling all midnight tokers: Pot will be legal in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.

In November, District voters approved a ballot measure to legalize small amounts of recreational marijuana for personal, in-home use.

Starting at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, adults 21 years of age or older will be able to lawfully possess 2 ounces or less of marijuana and use marijuana on private property. They will also be able to transfer 1 ounce or less of marijuana to another person, as long as no money, goods or services are exchanged and the recipient is 21 years of age or older.

The law also allows D.C. residents to grow up to six pot plants in their primary residence, but no more than three can be mature at one time, according to a news release from Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office.

It will still be a crime for anyone to possess more than 2 ounces of marijuana, smoke marijuana in public spaces including restaurants, bars and coffee shops, sell any amount of marijuana to another person, or operate a vehicle or boat while high.
