Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is calling for fellow Republicans to get behind attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch, who is awaiting Senate confirmation.
“I find Loretta Lynch not only to be an acceptable appointment, but I find her to be an extraordinary appointment,” Giuliani told reporters Friday morning.
“When I was mayor, I was very impressed with the successful way in which she investigated cases to protect the city of New York,” he added.
{mosads}Lynch, a longtime federal prosecutor in New York, has crossed paths with Giuliani on multiple occasions.
Senate Republicans are delaying Lynch’s confirmation vote until they come to an agreement with Democrats on an anti-human-trafficking bill.
But Democrats argue the delay is a political ploy Republicans are using to block Lynch’s nomination, which has been pending for more than 130 days.
Giuliani called for Republicans to put politics aside and confirm Lynch.
“As you all know, I am a Republican,” Giuliani said. “I don’t always agree with the president, but this goes beyond agreement with the president or disagreement with the president.”
“Whether the president is a Republican or a Democrat, the president is entitled to his choice (of attorney general),” he added.
