Brett Favre to testify in Mississippi welfare case

NFL hall of famer Brett Favre will testify in the Mississippi case that alleges he stole welfare money from the state to use for personal projects.

Court documents filed Monday show that Favre will testify on Oct. 26. He is one of more than three dozen defendants in the case, brought by the director of the state Department of Human Services.

The department alleges that Favre and other defendants conspired to misappropriate more than $77 million from state welfare funds between 2016 and 2019, according to a 2020 state audit.

Specifically, Favre orchestrated $5 million for his alma mater University of Southern Mississippi to build a volleyball arena — where his daughter played the sport at the time.

He also received $1.1 million in speaking fees for speeches he never gave — which his attorneys say he has repaid — and a $1.7 million investment for a sports medicine company he had also invested in, state attorneys allege.

The famed quarterback was never charged with a crime, though others in the case have pleaded guilty to criminal charges.

Favre’s deposition will be video recorded for the case.
