Trump appeals order siding with House Democrats bank subpoenas

President Trump’s attorneys on Friday filed an appeal of a judge’s order rejecting their request to temporarily halt congressional subpoenas seeking Trump’s financial records.

The lawyers are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to review a ruling from Judge Edgardo Ramos, an Obama appointee, that sided with House Democrats requesting records from Deutsche Bank and Capital One.

{mosads}Trump, his private businesses and family members filed a lawsuit in April to halt the subpoenas, issued by House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

They argued the subpoenas went beyond Congress’s authorities and were an attempt to dredge up political dirt ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

House Democrats say the requests were part of legitimate investigations, an argument the judge sided with in his ruling.

This is the second appeal of such an order filed this week after a federal judge in D.C. also ruled in favor of a subpoena for Trump’s financial records from the president’s accounting firm, Mazars.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday agreed to expedite that appeal, and will hear oral arguments on the matter in mid-July.

This request in the New York–based appeals court is solely for Ramos’s order rejecting a preliminary injunction and to stop the subpoenas from being executed, as the rest of the lawsuit is expected to still play out in district court.
