NAFCU calls for security standards after breach at Bebe stores

The National Association of Federal Credit Union (NAFCU) is once again pushing Congress to set data security standards after another breach at a retail store.

Bebe Stores, Inc., a popular women’s clothing store, reported Friday that it detected suspicious activity on computers that operate its payment processing system. 

{mosads}In a news release, Bebe said it worked with a computer security firm to block the attack, but information from payment cards used in its U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands stores from Nov. 8 to Nov. 26 could have been compromised. 

Bebe is advising customers to check their bank statements. 

“Despite a year-long rash of retail data breaches since the massive Target data breach, nothing has changed for American consumers in terms of greater data security or breach notification standards for retailers,” NAFCU President and CEO Dan Berger said in a news release. 

“Congress needs to put an end to cybercriminals’ free rein on consumers’ financial and personal information and make retailers subject to the same national data security standards that apply to financial institutions, such as the requirements of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.”
