DOL gives $22M to create jobs in hurricane disaster areas

The Labor Department announced Monday that it is giving $22 million in grant funding to help with recovery efforts in Florida and the Carolinas in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, which hit the East Coast last month.

The National Dislocated Worker Grant money will be used to employ 1,300 workers between the three states help clean up and repair destroyed public buildings, facilities and lands in affected communities and help humanitarian efforts as needed.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce will get $14.8 million with $4.9 million up front to hire 944 people, and Florida will get $7 million with $2.3 million up front to hire 350 people. The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce will get $500,000 to hire 25 people.
