The Never Trump crowd is coordinating an unorthodox “vote-trading” campaign in key battleground states just days before the 2016 election in an effort to take down Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
At TrumpTraders.org, tens of thousands of Hillary Clinton allies who live in safe Democratic states like California have agreed to swap votes with supporters of third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein who live in swing states like Ohio.
{mosads}Third-party voters risk “spoiling a Clinton victory,” said John Stubbs, co-founder of Republicans for Clinton in 2016, the group behind the effort to take down Trump.
The website has attracted a quarter-million views, and more than 20,000 people have agreed to swap votes, though there’s no guarantee they will follow through on Election Day.
“Since voting is confidential, it’s based on the honor system,” said Ricardo Reyes, a Republicans for Clinton co-founder.
The effort may play into Trump’s claims of a rigged election. Trump’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
But Republicans for Clinton hope their strategy will increase voter turnout and make every vote count.
Stubbs called on Johnson and Stein to encourage their voters to participate in the vote-trading campaign. Neither of their campaigns responded to a request for comment.
“By converting their supporters to choose between one of the only two real choices we have in this election, Jill Stein and Gary Johnson can help prevent what we’re all afraid of: a Donald Trump presidency,” Stubbs said.
