Manager, Strategic Policy Projects (Grant Funded)  

Are you passionate about the role of federal policy in improving child and family health and wellbeing? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is seeking a Manager of Strategic Policy Projects to support the AAP Federal Advocacy team’s growing portfolio of grant-funded federal policy projects.  

  

We are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional to manage an array of special projects and support AAP efforts to fundraise for new policy-focused projects. Strong candidates will have a passion for the role of federal policy in improving child health outcomes, excellent time and project management skills, and superior oral and written communication skills suited to persuading policymakers. Candidates must possess the ability to write clearly and concisely for multiple audiences.   

  

This position needs a creative and flexible strategic thinker who has the discretion and diplomacy skills necessary to engage with current and potential funders, key organizational partners, pediatrician leaders, and federal policymakers and their staff. This includes the ability to see opportunities for optimal impact by aligning grant-funded project activities with the AAP’s mission and federal advocacy agenda, funder priorities, and policymaker interests.  

  

This position will entail staffing and supporting an AAP-led coalition focused on maximizing federal investments in research to prevent gun violence, including organizing efforts to bring researchers to Washington, DC to meet policymakers and their staff. In addition, this position will support multiple AAP projects focused on improving child and family health and wellbeing through reforms to the child protective services and foster care systems. These projects expand the impact of the AAP’s Federal Advocacy team by allowing targeted focus on key AAP priorities. Additional projects will become available through this position’s support in securing new investments from philanthropic partners.   

  

Qualified candidates must have three years of relevant experience managing projects related to federal policy on Capitol Hill, with the federal government, a foundation, or an advocacy organization. A strong working knowledge of the legislative and regulatory process is required. BA or other postsecondary degree in liberal arts, science, health, government, or other related discipline required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and federal legislative and regulatory work experience. Must promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment, with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our downtown office in Northwest DC.
