Tech 101 is offering fundamental digital skills training you need to know — and it’s all 100% free

Common sense isn’t always so common. And basic skills aren’t always so basic. Even if you’ve risen to a prominent place in your professional career, that doesn’t mean there might not be some glaring holes in your business resume.

Maybe you don’t know how to create visualizations or do data analysis using Microsoft Excel. Or you could have been left out of the Zoom video-conferencing explosion. Or, maybe all the talk about digital security when you’re online mostly goes right over your head.

Everything that sounds basic can often be brand new to someone else. This online learning platform was created by the Fort Erie International Academy, partnered with telecommunications firm, Huawei, to help anyone and everyone get the baseline digital training needed to get hired in today’s modern job market. So far, more than 10,000 Canadians have availed themselves of the service, learning these foundational abilities at absolutely no cost.

Each of the 10 featured courses is built to serve as an all-encompassing dive into one of these key digital knowledge areas, a comprehensive one-hour video that meshes interactive lessons, quizzes, and high-quality learning modules to offer a 360-degree view of a discipline so first-time users can get up to speed quickly.

Microsoft Office and its array of critical productivity apps are included here, with courses covering how to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and both beginner and advanced training in Microsoft Excel. As for communication tools that keep modern business moving, learners can get experience learning and using tools like Gmail, Zoom, Google Calendar, and Microsoft Teams. Finally, there’s also a pair of courses geared toward helping impart some critical life skills, including using online banking and protecting yourself with proper cybersecurity measures. “Once you do one program, you won’t stop and you’ll go WOW,” said Tech 101 user Rob Stockman.

Each course is crafted by the FEIA’s education experts and taught by an acknowledged professional in the discipline, earning a digital certificate once the course is completed. In addition to each training video, learners can always turn to the Tech 101 community for help when needed. Through the Tech 101 Facebook page, students can post questions and engage with both instructors and other students to make sure they’re understanding all the training. There’s even a means to sync up with a mentor who can help guide each learner through the courses or even offer some much-needed career help, too.
