Watch live: Senate holds hearing on nomination for ambassador of Israel

The Senate Foreign Relations committee will hold a hearing Wednesday to confirm Jacob Lew as ambassador to Israel.

Lew, who served as Treasury secretary under former President Obama, was nominated by Biden last month after Tom Nides departed the role in July. Democrats say Lew’s wealth of government experience — he was also Obama’s former chief of staff and a White House budget director under Obama former President Clinton — makes him the right person to fill the post at an important moment.

The confirmation hearing on Lew’s nomination comes as President Biden visits Israel to reinforce U.S. support for the region and attempt to ease tensions amid its war with Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The Biden administration said Tuesday that it will consider a funding request of between $90 to $100 billion for the wars in both Israel and Ukraine — including Taiwan as it faces threats from China.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
