President Biden spoke Monday at the Philadelphia fire station that houses Ladder 1, a company disbanded in the late 2000s, but now reopening through part of a $22.4 million Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to the city’s fire department. Two other fire companies in Philadelphia will also be able to resume operations with the funding.

The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that Ladder 1 is located in the Fairmount neighborhood, where a rowhouse fire in 2022 killed 12 people, nine of them children. Local firefighter union leader Mike Bresnan made the case to Biden that the community needed service restored.

Bresnan, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) and city officials are expected to appear with Biden at the event, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. EST.
