House panel grills Austin on delayed hospitalization notification: Watch live

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will testify before the House Armed Services Committee on his delay in notifying the White House about his hospitalization in January, after suffering complications from prostate cancer surgery.

The Pentagon on Monday released the results of a 30-day review that found no attempt to hide his secret hospitalizations in December and January, effectively absolving officials of any wrongdoing.

Austin has faced backlash from lawmakers in both parties for failing to notify President Biden of his absence, and a lack of transparency with Congress and the public.

The defense chief apologized for being secretive after his diagnosis and hospitalization became public, admitting that “We did not handle this right. I did not handle this right.”

Austin is likely to also be questioned on the U.S. response to Israel’s ongoing war against Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza and strikes from other Iran-backed groups.
