Senators are set to decide Wednesday whether to hold a trial on the two articles of impeachment levied against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by House Republicans.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday afternoon that he will move to dismiss the charges. But conservatives continue to push for a full trial, arguing that Mayorkas repeatedly violated immigration and border security laws by allowing “millions of aliens” to enter the United States illegally and “unlawfully” remain in the country.
The House sent the articles of impeachment to the Senate on Tuesday — about two months after they narrowly passed in the lower chamber.
Senators will be sworn in as jurors at the start of the event, expected to begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
