Watch: Garland testifies before House under pressure of GOP contempt effort

Recorded earlier

Attorney General Merrick Garland appeared before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday in a hearing focused on oversight of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Garland is facing a threat of possible contempt of Congress after refusing to respond to earlier subpoenas from the Judiciary and Oversight committees. A House GOP panel advanced the vote to hold him in contempt last month, but the move is largely symbolic, as it acts as a referral to the Justice Department, which must weigh whether charges are fitting.

The GOP-led committees accuse Garland of overseeing politically motivated prosecution investigations into alleged illegal actions taken by former President Trump. At the same time, members in the House Republican majority have accused the DOJ of failure to thoroughly investigate allegations of corruption involving President Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
