Watch: Harris woos voters at campaign stop in Houston

Vice President Harris speaks at the American Federation of Teachers' 88th National Convention on July 25, 2024, in Houston. The American Federation of Teachers is the first labor union to endorse Harris for president since announcing her campaign.

Vice President Harris made a campaign appearance Wednesday evening in Houston, her second such visit in as many weeks to the largest city in Texas, one of the predominantly red state’s deep blue islands.

The campaign appearance comes one day before Harris will attend the funeral of Houston’s long-serving Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), who the vice president described as a “tenacious advocate for justice” in a statement following her death.

Texas’s 40 electoral votes are considered safely in the column for former President Trump, but the state represents a symbolic battleground for Harris. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has been a leading figure in the GOP strategy to assign much of the blame for the migrant crisis to the vice president.
