Watch: Trump campaigns in Michigan with remarks focused on crime

Former President Trump arrives to speak at a campaign rally in Bozeman, Mont., Aug. 9, 2024.

Former President Trump made a campaign speech Tuesday afternoon on the subject of crime in the Detroit exurban community of Howell, Mich. The Trump campaign has condemned the Biden administration’s record on law enforcement.

In recent polls, Vice President Harris has closed the gap with Trump to a statistical tie in the Great Lakes State. Republican voter turnout in the Detroit suburbs, which lean more conservative than their neighbors in the core city, could play a pivotal role in how the state swings.

The Harris campaign has criticized the location of Tuesday’s Trump event. It notes that Howell, a city that carries a historical association with right-wing extremists, was the site of a rally in July in which white supremacists chanted, “We love Hitler. We love Trump.” As The Washington Post reports, the Trump campaign pointed out that President Biden has also visited Howell.
