NASA is slated to provide an update on the Boeing Starliner capsule that has been docked on the International Space Station (ISS) since its June launch.
The agency is expected to determine Saturday whether the spacecraft is safe enough to return its two-person crew to Earth. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched to the ISS on June 5 after multiple delayed attempts due to thruster failures and helium leaks.
An eight-day mission quickly turned into a months-long adventure, as the capsule crew completed testing at the space station. NASA said earlier this month that they may have to wait until next February, with the help of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, to return.
If NASA decides to use SpaceX, the Starliner capsule would return to Earth empty in September, per The Associated Press.
The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
