Watch : House GOP holds first presser of 119th Congress amid reconciliation debate
House Republican leaders held a news conference Tuesday morning as GOP lawmakers grapple with President-elect Trump’s public back-and-forth over whether Congress should pass his agenda in one or two massive spending bills.
Over the weekend, the president-elect called for “one powerful bill” to deal with energy, the southern border, taxes and potentially the debt limit — but later signaled he was open to two separates bills.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Sunday he expects to pass most of Trump’s agenda before Memorial Day.
The press conference marked the first of the 119th Congress and first after Johnson was reelected Speaker last week.
These remarks also came a day after Trump was certified as the 2024 election winner. Republicans gave a standing ovation in the chamber when Vice President Harris, who lost the election, announced Trump’s official victory.
The event was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
