Watch: DeWine announces Vance’s Senate replacement

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) announced the Senate replacement for Vice President-elect JD Vance on Friday afternoon.

With just days left until President-elect Trump returns to the Oval Office, Vance officially resigned from Congress a week ago. DeWine’s replacement will serve until 2026.

Two of the names floated were Trump’s former primary rival Vivek Ramaswamy — who was tapped to serve in an administration role — and Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted (R). Per DeWine’s announcement, the position will go to the sitting lieutenant governor.

Ramaswamy, meanwhile, is now poised to become a leading candidate for governor of Ohio, a role DeWine is required to vacate because of term limits.

While Republicans took control of the upper chamber in the 2024 election, delivering the GOP full control of government, their majorities remain slim.
