Watch: White House holds briefing amid fallout from Trump Gaza proposal

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed the press Wednesday afternoon, a day after President Trump floated the idea that the U.S. take over the Gaza Strip, as the war-ravaged region is under a fragile ceasefire.

Trump suggested during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday that the U.S. could help rebuild Gaza. He also suggested that other countries could help permanently resettle Palestinians after more than 15 months of war have left many displaced.

That idea has been rejected by Democratic lawmakers, as well as U.S. allies and adversaries alike.

Trump has also proposed in recent weeks that the U.S. buy Greenland from Denmark, work to regain the Panama Canal — even if it requires military force — and merge with Canada. His recent tariff threats on Canada and Mexico, currently on a pause, have also put a strain on the nation’s relationship with its North American neighbors.

The briefing also came after Trump signed an executive order earlier Wednesday that will ban transgender athletes from women’s sports.

The event was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST.
