Watch: Progressives hold press conference on Mahmoud Khalil’s detention

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) speaks during a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee markup on Jan. 10, 2024, in Washington.

A group of progressive House Democrats held a press conference Tuesday morning on the ongoing detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columba University graduate who led campus protests against Israel’s war in Gaza last year.

Among the lawmakers who planned to join: Reps. Delia Ramirez (Ill.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Pramila Jayapal (Wash.) and Greg Casar (Texas).

Khalil’s arrest has spread fear among Pro-Palestinian activists and green card holders, no longer sure of their freedoms and protections.

The Department of Justice on Monday accused Khalil of covering up work for multiple organizations in his application to become a permanent resident.

The press conference was scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT
