Watch live: White House holds press briefing one day before tariffs deadline

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt speaks with reporters in the James Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, March 26, 2025.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt spoke to reporters Tuesday afternoon, a day before President Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China and certain product imports are set to take place.

The president has dubbed April 2 as “liberation day,” vowing to also levy reciprocal tariffs on countries that target the U.S. Though he has suggested that some nations may receive a reprieve.

The press briefing followed the Trump administration’s decision to close its probe into a Signal app chat where top national security advisers inadvertently shared plans about a strike on Houthi rebels in Yemen with a veteran journalist. The leak, dubbed “Signalgate,” was largely brushed off by the president and his officials.

It also came as rhetoric around Trump launching a third-term bid has heated up in recent days.

The press briefing was scheduled to begin at noon EDT.
