Watch: White House holds briefing amid Trump, Supreme Court immigration scuffle

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed reporters Tuesday afternoon as President Trump and the Supreme Court tango over his sweeping immigration agenda — including using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to speed up deportations.

The nation’s highest court moved early Saturday to halt the administration’s ability to use the 18th century law to fly migrants to El Salvador.

Trump on Monday complained that he’s been “stymied at every turn” by the courts, arguing the administration can’t hold trials for migrants it plans to deport amid accusations they are gang members. Democrats and other critics have admonished the administration for sidestepping “due process.”

The briefing also came as Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador in mid-March, has been transferred to the Centro Industrial Penitentiary facility in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The administration’s refusal to facilitate his return, which the Supreme Court ruled it must do earlier this month, has sparked criticism over whether the president is purposely defying court orders.

The event was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
