Watch: Jeffries gives remarks as lawmakers look to avert shutdown

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak Thursday morning as lawmakers race to avert a government shutdown.

Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have vowed a rocky battle if Democrats are left out of negotiations over any stopgap funding measure or long-term proposal. Lawmakers have until Sept. 30 to avoid a government funding lapse.

The Democratic leaders have pressed their GOP counterparts, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), for a “four corners” meeting to give them more time to set the parameters of a spending deal.

Jeffries’s weekly press conference also comes a day after victims of convicted sex offender and late financier Jeffrey Epstein gave remarks outside of the Capitol alongside lawmakers, including several Republicans, to press the Justice Department and Congress for more transparency in the case.

The Jeffries event is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. EDT.
