Strategists: Sanders’s hopes rest on strong showing in Iowa

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) needs a strong showing in the Iowa caucuses to have a chance at his party’s nomination, several Democratic strategists say.

Obama administration alum Daniella Gibbs Léger tells The Hill that it will “be a bigger stumbling block if [Sanders] doesn’t win Iowa than for other candidates, but I don’t want to say it’s impossible.”

{mosads}Seasoned Democratic operative Mark Mellman, a columnist for The Hill, says Sanders’s odds go down “dramatically” if he loses Iowa, but a victory there could put him in the driver’s seat.

“If Bernie Sanders wins in Iowa then he can win in New Hampshire, that really puts him in a strong position going forward,” Mellman said.

“If he doesn’t win Iowa and wins New Hampshire, it’s gonna be hard for him, there’s no question about it. But at least he’ll have a second life at that point, if he wins New Hampshire without winning Iowa. If he doesn’t win any of those contests, it’s really all over.”
