Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) is pushing legislation that would stop stores from selling expired baby formula.
{mosads}Meng told The Hill she is talking with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers on her bill to keep outdated formula off the shelves. The freshman Democrat has called her legislation “a no-brainer” and is stunned that it’s necessary.
“Everyone I tell … they are shocked this is legal,” Meng said.
Infant formula manufacturers are mandated to display expiration dates on their products, but there is no requirement to remove the expired products from store shelves.
Stores that fail to comply could be fined up to $200,000.
