McCain: Dennis Rodman is no spy

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) doubts Dennis Rodman’s claim that he’s partly responsible for North Korea releasing at least one American citizen recently.

“I’m not sure that Dennis Rodman is well trained to gather intelligence,” McCain says.

{mosads}Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller are back on American soil after being released last week by North Korea. Bae had been detained for more than two years in the country.

“I have no idea what brought those prisoners back,” McCain says in a video posted Thursday on TMZ.com when asked how likely it was that the former Chicago Bulls forward played a role in the release.

The ex-NBA star has said he played a critical part in Bae’s release after penning a letter back in January to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Rodman has visited the so-called “Hermit Kingdom” multiple times, in the past calling Kim his “friend.”

In the letter, Rodman wrote, “I ask for your mercy to prisoner Kenneth Bae and would be eternally grateful for his safe return and make a big step towards bridging the gap between our two nations.”

On Rodman’s basketball-filled trips to Pyongyang, McCain says, “I thought it was certainly a bizarre episode.”
