Dem lawmaker: Congress must play role in Iran deal

The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee tells The Hill that Congress must have a say in any agreement the White House strikes on limiting Iran’s nuclear powers.

{mosads}Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) refrained from backing specific legislation to ensure that Congress can approve or reject a possible deal with Iran. However, he told The Hill’s Molly Hooper, “I would oppose something that would not give Congress a role.”

Asked if the White House should release all details of a negotiated agreement, Engel responded, “No … they’ve been negotiating, the administration, they’ve got a right to sign a bill or shake hands on a bill but I think we in Congress have a right — we’re a separate branch of government and we have an important say.”
