Strategist: Partnership with Trump is ‘in Ryan’s court’

Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) relationship with President-elect Donald Trump will depend on how Ryan approaches it, a GOP strategist says.

“This election did not in any way validate Paul Ryan, it was giving a mandate to President-elect [Donald Trump],” Brett Decker, co-author of “The Conservative Case for Trump,” told The Hill.

{mosads}Days after winning the election, Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence met with Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday afternoon.

Trump and Ryan butted heads frequently during the campaign. Ryan at one point declined to endorse Trump after he’d become the GOP presidential nominee, and Trump responded by withholding his support from Ryan in a primary challenge.

After a 2005 tape was leaked revealing Trump speaking vulgarly about groping women, Ryan said he would no longer try to defend Trump, instead only focusing on House races.
