WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) says President Trump is not planning on firing special counsel Robert Mueller.

“I’ve talked to the president a number of times. He’s not going to fire the special prosecutor. He’s not even contemplating it, so, at this point, that’s more for reporters to hypothesize on than the reality of it happening. So, I just don’t see it happening,” Meadows said in an interview with The Hill during a break at the three-day GOP retreat at The Greenbrier resort.

Rumors have circulated for months that Trump has considered firing Mueller, who is conducting the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

In December of last year, some lawmakers said Trump would fire the special counsel before the new year —  a rumor that proved untrue.

Meadows and other Republican lawmakers are at a joint House-Senate retreat in West Virginia this week. Congressional Republicans have used the party meeting, which began a day after President Trump’s State of the Union speech, to map out the 2018 legislative agenda.
