Lawmaker Interviews

WATCH: Leadership change inevitable, Dem rep says, but timing bad now

A Democratic lawmaker says his caucus will get “new blood” in leadership “one way or the other.”

“Our leadership, which is very capable, are all in their 70s, so, obviously, there’s going to be a change,” Rep. Gerry Connolly (Va.) told The Hill when asked if House Dems need a change at the top.

The Virginia Democratic lawmaker added, however, that this is not the time for House Democrats  to “be distracted by internal battles … it’s the wrong time to have that battle.”

{mosads}Rep. Cheri Bustos (Ill.), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s heartland outreach chairwoman, would prefer to focus on winning back races for control of the House.

“We’ve got some within our caucus who are looking at what’s going on with our leadership. I want to look at making sure when we go home every weekend and every district work period that we’re talking about jobs and the economy,” the Illinois Democratic lawmaker said in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper.
