President Trump should quit threatening to defund part of congressional healthcare plans because it’s “probably not particularly productive,” GOP Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.) told The Hill on Tuesday.
{mosads}“I could absolutely care less, it has no effect on me whatsoever,” he said. “But if I were [Trump], instead of threatening — since it’s totally his decision — do it or don’t do it, but I would quit talking about it,” he continued in an interview with The Hill’s Molly K. Hooper.
Over the weekend, Trump called on the Senate to keep working on a repeal of Obamacare, threatening in a tweet that, “If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!”
Corker noted that the so-called “bailouts” for lawmakers and congressional staffers are similar to standard employer contributions for insurance.
“Now, to call it a bailout, these people,” Corker gestured down the hallway of a Senate building, “all these staffers some of whom make almost nothing, OK? [But they] get an employer contribution just like anyone else gets who works at a company or entity they work at.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman reiterated that “as it relates to me, I could care less what he does, I could care less.”
