Eiffel Tower goes dark to honor victims of New Zealand mosque shootings

The Eiffel Tower went dark Friday night as a tribute to the 49 people killed in the attacks on two New Zealand mosques earlier that day.

In a video tweeted by Agence France-Presse, the bright lights of the iconic French structure can be seen shutting off in segments.

At least 49 people were killed and dozens more injured after at least one gunman opened fire in two mosques in Christchurch.

The suspected shooter has been charged with one count of murder, but will likely face more charges. The suspect, a 28-year-old Australian man, posted a white nationalist manifesto on Twitter and announced his intentions to livestream the mass shooting on a fringe chatroom.{mosads}

The attack sent shockwaves around the world with world leaders offering aid and expressing support for New Zealand.

The Eiffel Tower has gone dark to honor victims of national tragedies before, doing so in October to honor of the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. The tower also went dark in December to honor the four victims of a Christmas market shooting in the French city of Strasbourg.
