Trump explains ‘nasty’ Meghan Markle comments, says he thinks duchess is ‘very nice’

President Trump in a new interview sought to explain his previous remarks about Meghan Markle, saying he didn’t think the Duchess of Sussex was “nasty” but that the comments she made about him were.

Trump made his latest remarks about the princess and former American actress in an interview with Piers Morgan that is set to air Wednesday morning on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain,” according to The Daily Mail.{mosads}

Asked by Morgan if Trump thought Markle was “nasty,” Trump reportedly said that Markle’s past comments about him being  “divisive” and “misogynistic” were. But he emphasized that he did not view Markle as a nasty person.

“They said some of the things that she said and it’s actually on tape,” Trump said, referring to his interview with the British tabloid The Sun ahead of his state visit to the U.K. this week. The paper had asked him if we was aware of the comments Markle made about him during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“And I said, ‘Well, I didn’t know she was nasty,'” Trump continued in his interview with Morgan. “I wasn’t referring to she’s nasty. I said she was nasty about me. And essentially I didn’t know she was nasty about me.”

Trump later praised Markle, an American-born actress, as “very nice,” adding that he hopes she “enjoys her life.”

“She was nasty to me. And that’s OK for her to be nasty, it’s not good for me to be nasty to her and I wasn’t,” Trump said, according to The Daily Mail.

Trump has voiced frustration over how his comments about Markle were portrayed last week. He tweeted on Sunday that he never called her “nasty” and that the “Fake News Media” had gotten it wrong.

“I never called Meghan Markle ‘nasty,'” he said on Twitter. “Made up by the Fake News Media, and they got caught cold! Will @CNN, @nytimes and others apologize? Doubt it!”

Trump has met with a number of members of the royal family this week, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, during his state visit to the U.K.

Markle, who recently gave birth to a baby boy, has been on maternity leave amid the visit and has not met with the president.
