Brazil President Bolsonaro hospitalized with intestinal obstruction

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized with an intestinal obstruction on Monday, officials said.

The Brazilian government said Bolsonaro, 66, was taken to a hospital in Sao Paulo to undergo testing after feeling abdominal discomfort, according to The Associated Press.

Bolsonaro is in stable condition, the AP reported, citing a statement from the Villa Nova Star hospital.

The government wrote in a statement that Bolsonaro is “doing well,” according to the news service.

Bolsonaro posted a photo to Twitter of himself in a hospital bed giving a thumbs up. He said he started feeling poorly after lunch on Sunday and was given a nasogastric tube at the hospital. The tube helps to drain fluid from a patient’s stomach if they have an intestinal obstruction, according to The New York Times.

“More tests will be conducted for a potential surgery on an internal obstruction in the abdominal region,” Bolsonaro added, according to Reuters.

He said it was the second time he has been hospitalized “with the same symptoms” after being stabbed at a campaign event in September 2018, Reuters noted. Bolsonaro underwent a number of emergency operations after the 2018 incident.

Bolsonaro was admitted to the hospital after experiencing a chronic case of hiccups in July. He was initially admitted for testing after experiencing abdominal pains.

He was released after undergoing four days of medical treatment at the hospital.
