Romney prods Trump: ‘Show voters your back taxes’

Mitt Romney is stepping up his fight with Donald Trump, daring the GOP presidential front-runner to release his tax returns.

“Methinks the Donald doth protest too much,” tweeted Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee. “Show voters your back taxes, @realDonald Trump,” he added with the hashtag #WhatIsHeHiding?”

Romney prodded Trump for his tax returns late Wednesday, suggesting they may contain “bombshell” information for voters.

{mosads}“I think there’s something there,” the former Massachusetts governor said on Fox News. “Either he’s not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is, or he hasn’t been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay, or perhaps he hasn’t been giving money to the vets or the disabled like he’s been telling us he’s been doing.”

Trump responded Wednesday night that he is in “no rush” to release his back taxes, adding that his extensive business dealings require careful documentation.

“My returns are extremely complex, and I’ll make a determination at the right time,” he said on CNN of releasing his records.

The outspoken billionaire also lashed out at Romney, needling him for losing “very badly” against President Obama in 2012.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) made Romney’s own back taxes a 2012 campaign issue, suggesting the businessman was taking advantage of certain filing loopholes.

Romney eventually released his returns dating back to 1990. He is also urging Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, Trump’s main rivals for the GOP nomination, to do the same.
