Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is learning a lesson about betting against the New York Mets.

Schiff, who represents suburban Los Angeles and is a big Dodgers fan, took to the floor Friday to serenade the House, a week after the New York Mets beat his team in the Major League Baseball playoffs.

{mosads}Schiff had made a bet with Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), an avid Mets fan, requiring the loser to give a speech “extolling the virtues” of the winning team.

But the Californian went further than expected, first congratulating Israel and the Mets and then launching into a rendition of the team’s song, “Meet the Mets.”

Schiff warbled off-key, appearing as though he’d rather be anywhere else as he sang lines like: “Because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball, knockin’ the home runs over the wall.”

After finishing a verse, he pleaded, “Mr. Speaker, please tell me my time is expired.”

Under the terms of the bet, Schiff had to spend a day in the Capitol with the Mets logo on his tie, and he will give Israel gourmet popcorn from Pauline’s Premier Sweets in Burbank, Calif.

Had the Dodgers won, Israel would have had to pay up with fresh New York bagels as well as give a speech and wear a Dodgers tie.

The Mets followed their win over the Dodgers by sweeping the Chicago Cubs this week, putting them in the World Series for the first time in 15 years.

Schiff did note that despite his Dodgers’ loss, he is happy for the Mets.

“I say thank God the Mets are going to the World Series and not the Yankees.”
