Teen arrested for allegedly assaulting 81-year-old over ‘MAGA’ hat in New Jersey
A New Jersey teen has been arrested and charged for allegedly attacking an 81-year-old man for wearing one of President Trump‘s “Make America Great Again” hats.
Prosecutors in Somerset County, N.J., on Wednesday charged Ryan Salvagno, 19, with assault and harassment, according to the New York Post. Salvagno is set to appear in court over the charges in mid-March.
{mosads}Authorities said Salvagno confronted the 81-year-old man about the hat as the man exited a New Jersey supermarket, according to reports. Salvagno then reportedly tried to yank the hat off the man’s head after he tried to walk away, prompting a struggle over the headwear.
Salvagno then proceeded to throw the man to the ground before tipping over his cart of groceries, authorities said.
The victim had minor injuries but refused medical treatment, a local NBC affiliate reported earlier this week.
The caps with Trump’s signature slogan has been at the center of multiple altercations since Trump’s presidential campaign.
A woman in Massachusetts was charged this month with disorderly conduct after confronting a man in a Mexican restaurant and forcefully taking his MAGA hat off his head.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Tuesday that the woman was in the U.S. illegally and now faces deportation.
