Ava DuVernay invites Megan Rapinoe to dinner after Trump snub
Director Ava DuVernay on Wednesday invited U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe to dinner at her house following a feud between Rapinoe and President Trump.
“Killing it on the field. Got folks mad cause you don’t wanna eat fast food at their house,” tweeted DuVernay, the director of Netflix miniseries “When They See Us.”
“And I humbly invite you to dinner at my house anytime,” she tweeted, adding that Rapinoe is “so bad-ass.”
Oh, @mPinoe. You are so bad-ass. Killing it on the field. Got folks mad cause you don’t wanna eat fast food at their house. Just keep shining. And I humbly invite you to dinner at my house anytime. Until then, I’ll watch this video of you being cool and epic. Onward! #AllEyesOnUS pic.twitter.com/VwMpzKmq7r

Trump tweeted that “leagues and teams love coming to the White House,” adding that he is a “big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer,” but warned that “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!”
“We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose,” Trump tweeted.
Trump’s criticism followed the surfacing of a video of Rapinoe saying she is “not going to the f—— White House” if the U.S. soccer team wins the World Cup.
Teammate Ali Krieger defended Rapinoe, tweeting: “In regards to the ‘President’s’ tweet today, I know women who you cannot control or grope anger you, but I stand by @mPinoe & will sit this one out as well.”
Rapinoe, the team’s co-captain, is a vocal critic of Trump and has refused to place her hand over her heart during the national anthem — a move Trump also criticized, tweeting: “Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”
