In 2014, a Chinese businessman made headlines when he bought a 1-year-old Tibetan mastiff for $1.9 million.
“They have lion’s blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs,” the dog’s breeder, Zhang Gengyun, said at the time.
Fiercely loyal to its family and mellow at home, the breed is known to be standoffish and territorial with strangers.
In recent years, thousands of the breed, which was highly popular among China’s wealthy, have been abandoned and killed en masse following a collapse in demand for the breed.
