All 25 female senators signed a letter inviting the U.S. women’s soccer team to visit the Capitol after their historic World Cup victory on Sunday.
“We believe on a bipartisan basis that your model of unity, diversity, and passion should be something that is consistently celebrated and emulated,” reads the letter spearheaded by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.).
“We would like to invite you to meet with the women of the Senate to discuss the challenges women face on and off the field,” it continues.{mosads}
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday invited the team for a visit.
Lawmakers and businesses in Washington, D.C., have also extended celebratory invites for the team after star Megan Rapinoe said she’s “not going to the f—ing White House.”
Co-captain Alex Morgan said last week it would be a team decision.
The team visited the White House in 2015 after their last World Cup win when former President Obama extended an invite.
The group was celebrated with a parade in New York City on Wednesday, using their gender discrimination lawsuit as confetti during the festivities.
On the heels of their latest championship victory, the team has again put a spotlight on the pay discrepancy compared to their male counterparts.
